Foster care is a temporary living situation for children whose parents cannot take care of them and whose need for care has come to the attention of the child welfare system. While in
foster care, children are placed in out-of-home settings with the understanding this is a temporary solution that ends once a parent can get their life back on track or a relative, guardian, or adoptive family agrees to raise the child(ren).
A foster parent’s role is to temporarily provide a safe and stable home for children in crisis. Children who need foster families have been removed from their birth parents’ homes for reasons of abuse and/or neglect. Foster parents provide support, guidance, and care for the children in their foster homes.
There are currently 3,892 youths in Colroado’s foster care system. Often, youth in the system have lived through multiple traumas, which can impact their emotional and social environments. Having a foster parent can offer these youths an opportunity to achieve their full potential and to develop positive relationships within their community.
